Nestled in the historic heart of Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur, +N by Ur-Mu is an exemplary project that breathes new life into an old, non-descript 1940s modernist shophouse. Originally a budget backpackers’ hostel before serving as workers’ quarters for a nearby construction site, the building had fallen into a state of severe disrepair. Today, through thoughtful alteration and refurbishment, it has been transformed into a vibrant, multi-functional space that harmonizes history, art, and commerce. The restoration process focused on preserving the integrity of the original building while introducing modern enhancements.
At street level, a charming florist and café now occupy the ground and first floors, inviting both locals and visitors into a serene urban retreat. This commercial space adds a fresh and welcoming presence to the neighborhood, complementing the artistic vision that defines the upper levels of the building. The second to fourth floors house Ur-Mu (Urban Museum), a contemporary art space showcasing the esteemed collection of renowned art collector Ng Sek San. The museum serves as a cultural hub, providing an intimate setting for modern art lovers to engage with thought-provoking works in an urban context. By repurposing a once-forgotten building, Ur-Mu redefines how contemporary art can exist within the fabric of Kuala Lumpur’s historical landscape. Crowning the transformation is a rooftop water garden, a tranquil escape from the bustling city below.
