CoEx, an initiative by aLM Architects, transforms an old metal scrapyard into more than just an office—it is a community experiment and a space for imagination. The original façade and structures were preserved, maintaining its industrial identity while adapting to new functions. Through alteration and repurposing, it embraces the creative use of recycled materials, especially wood, where discarded timber is carefully crafted to showcase reinvention and skilled craftsmanship. This approach sets a precedent for sustainable design while aligning with the firm’s vision of curating experiences, shaping spaces through process, creativity, and resourcefulness, deeply rooted in Penang’s cultural DNA.
COEX Penang has truly set a benchmark in sustainable design by embracing reclaimed timber and showcasing its versatility. Since its establishment, the firm has been at the forefront in educating the local community on how reclaimed materials—particularly timber—can be used in innovative and beautiful ways. The use of reclaimed timber in COEX Penang showcases how sustainable materials can be woven into modern design, contributing to both aesthetic value and a lower environmental footprint. COEX achieves a 20% reduction in carbon footprint through alteration and addition, prioritizing minimal waste and efficient resource use. By repurposing discarded materials, integrating passive cooling, and optimizing spatial planning, the project minimizes energy consumption and construction waste.
