South Wing is one of three heritage Bungalows owned by the Client, Penang Institute; a non-profit organization and a major think tank supported by the Penang State Government. Penang Institute strives towards bold and innovative thinking for a brighter and more sustainable future. The South Wing is envisioned as a hub for ‘Forum for Leadership and Governance’ (FLAG), a major platform at which leadership roundtables, seminars and courses are held in shaping future leaders. Over the years, Penang Institute contributed in writing Penang2030’s and more towards creating Sustainable Cities & Communities as well as providing platform for meaningful partnerships.

The conservation approach for The Flag at Penang Institute prioritises heritage preservation, sustainability, and functionality. The existing bungalow was carefully restored and adapted into a vibrant community space while maintaining its historical integrity. Key conservation strategies include: 1) Preserving Heritage Materials – Retaining original elements such as clay roof tiles. 2) Adaptive Reuse – Repurposing the structure to reduce its carbon footprint. 3) Using Local Materials – Sourcing materials regionally for authenticity and sustainability. 4) Enhancing Natural Ventilation & Lighting – Reducing reliance on artificial systems. 5) Maintaining Visual Connectivity – Integrating indoor and outdoor spaces harmoniously. 6) Aligning with Global Sustainability Goals – Ensuring long-term resilience. Through meticulous restoration and sustainable design, The Flag exemplifies conservation that honours Penang’s architectural heritage while embracing future aspirations.
