Project Description

Ferringhi Bay Container Boulevard is a temporary commercial and public space intervention located along the Batu Ferringhi waterfront in Penang. The project reuses shipping containers as modular units to form a linear boulevard comprising four commercial zones supported by shared public facilities. Containers are arranged and stacked selectively to accommodate different scales of use, while maintaining openness toward the bay. Designed for flexibility and phased implementation, the boulevard provides an adaptable framework that supports everyday activity, informal gathering, and coastal public life.

The project explores adaptive reuse as a strategy for placemaking along the waterfront. Reclaimed shipping containers are treated not as fixed objects, but as flexible building blocks that can be reconfigured, stacked, and adapted over time. Their modular nature allows the boulevard to respond to varying programme requirements across the site, balancing consistency with local adjustment.

Rather than establishing a singular architectural form, the design prioritises openness, movement, and collective use. Circulation, shaded areas, and shared facilities are integrated to support informal occupation and social interaction throughout the day. By extending the life of existing containers and assembling them into a lightweight, reversible framework, the project positions architecture as an enabler of public life, capable of evolving alongside changing needs and activities along the bay.

Citation

The design responds well to its coastal setting, making full use of the beach and sea as primary assets. The shipping containers are oriented towards the sea to maximise views. The white sandy beach begins almost directly at the edge of the concrete pavements surrounding the containers. On the beach itself, patrons are seated beneath large umbrellas arranged systematically along the beachfront corridor. This arrangement allows visitors to enjoy the sea view while maintaining a strong visual and physical connection between the built structures and the natural landscape.
