Banyan Café & Bar

Banyan Café & Bar adaptively reuses a formerly abandoned residential bungalow along Lorong Yap Kwan Seng, a street historically characterised by low-rise homes that predate Kuala Lumpur’s rapid urban densification. The design introduces a glasshouse dining hall and an upper-level terrace, where it transitions seamlessly from a relaxing café during the day to a vibrant night bar. The project retains the existing structure and mature trees, conserving embodied energy while preserving the scale and memory of the area. Through adaptive reuse, the project contributes to urban regeneration by reconnecting historical fabric with contemporary urban life.

Banyan Cafe & Bar preserves the site’s existing bungalow scale and structures at Lorong Yap Kwan Seng and the notably two mature trees on site, adopting adaptive reuse as design catalyst and creative constraint rather than a limitation.

Existing structures and trees orchestrate spatial organisation to separate serve and servant spaces, as well as outdoor, indoor and semi-outdoor spaces to cater different functions and weathers.

Apart from program flexibility, the project playfully reinterprets Banyan tree as an architectural protagonist, treated as a living column and a natural shade. Soaring high and lush above, the tree offers a comfortable microclimate amidst concrete jungle.

Material selections and detailings complement tropical setting such as raw concrete and bricks, honest to their aesthetics and expressions.

Columns and slabs become casual inhabitable seating platforms, transitional niche and social ledges to catalyse human activities rather than applying loose furnishes, dissolving nature, architecture and interior design.
