The formation of the Federation of the Malay States in 1896 marked a turning point in early Malaya’s architectural legacy. European revivalist styles influenced the decorative ornamentation and motifs of FMS shophouses, first seen at Medan Pasar. Built by Loke Yew in 1906, 2&4 Medan Pasar, designed by Indian-Anglo architect Abdul Kadier Moosdeen features Flemish gables, stucco detailing, pilasters, Ionic capitals, and semi-circular windows. The hallmark is the reinstatement of original Indian furrow roof tiles which were also used in the Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad. Authenticity in terms of materials and techniques was promoted through the revival of lime plasterwork.
No.2 & 4 were selected as a catalyst for change and as a flagship project to revitalise and transform Medan Pasar. It aims to preserve the significance of the square, and to promote heritage conservation and exemplary best practices.
An excellence-driven client who was supportive of this vision is key to achieving these benchmarks. The final product aspires to set a new standard for conservation consciousness.
Through the process of restoration, we continue to understand the site. True impact is only realised in the near future when activation of the entire square is complete, upholding its function as a living and working space, bringing back the cycle of life, attracting the right talents and investments, and to be a showcase for culture, tourism, academia and the community.
Situated near the Klang–Gombak river confluence, the project restores Medan Pasar’s historic streetscape, reinforcing the square’s civic identity and renewing its role within Kuala Lumpur’s urban fabric.
