The Campus Ampang

The former International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) has undergone a transformative adaptive re-use, turning it into a vibrant community hub. Retaining its educational legacy, The Campus seamlessly integrates retail, F&B, sports, education, and performing arts. Existing amenities such as the theatre, swimming pool, and football pitch are retained and now complimented by a supermarket, cafes, shops and pop-up stores encouraging a broad, family centric demographic and diverse usage across the community. The Campus celebrates it’s 50 years heritage, preserving the essence of the school, while fostering a thriving, sustainable social and commercial space, supporting local businesses and community engagement.

The former ISKL has emerged into a dynamic community hub through a careful balance of alteration and addition, preservation and modern intervention. A new central courtyard, the social heart of the campus, is carved out, enhancing natural ventilation and customer orientation, while amphitheatre-style steps create an engaging focal point. Existing structures are reimagined with increased transparency - solid walls are replaced with open retail frontages, and sightlines are improved for better spatial flow. Iconic folded roof canopies, conceived as light folded origami, define the key drop-off points, juxtaposing the old with contemporary elements. Raw materials like fair-faced brick, pebble-wash and concrete are retained and complemented by The Campus's distinctive new brand colours. At night, subtle lighting interventions enhance both the architecture and the landscape. The existing half round stair towers have been deconstructed and planted with hanging creepers whilst open courtyards with strategic landscape integration embrace a sustainable approach.
