Seri Negara stands as a symbol of Malaysia’s nationhood, remembered as the site where the Federation of Malaya Agreement was signed and the Constitution drafted. Reclaimed by Malaysia in 1984 and inscribed as heritage in 1986, its conservation underscores heritage integrity, adaptive reuse and sustainability. The architectural approach carefully preserves its historic character and setting while introducing contemporary functions — a museum, café, and dining spaces — that open the landmark to the public. Once reserved for dignitaries, Seri Negara today embodies cultural pride, bridging past and present as a vibrant heritage destination returned to the people of Malaysia.
The restoration of Seri Negara (est. 1913) transforms a site of exclusive diplomacy into a public gallery for the nation. HL Architecture, in collaboration with CGB Consultants, executed a meticulous 10-month conservation program to restore the building’s structural integrity while adapting the fabric for modern cultural usage.
The intervention utilized a refined material palette of terracotta, lime plaster, and wrought iron to preserve its character. Technical upgrades were integrated respectfully; modern building services were concealed within the attic to maximize ceiling heights, while clerestory windows discovered during demolition were fully restored and exposed. The grand timber staircase was reconstructed using archival photographic evidence to restore the building's main central circulation.
This project is a technical exercise in reclaiming sovereignty through the built environment. By opening the doors where the Federation of Malaya Agreement was signed, we facilitate a direct dialogue between Malaysia’s heritage and its future.
The project demonstrates a careful response to its historic setting, preserving the building’s heritage character while reinforcing its relationship with the surrounding landscape and public green spaces.
